Companies House Identity Verification: What Business Leaders Need to Know
A significant change to Companies House operations has been launched, requiring business leaders across the UK to take immediate action. From 8 April 2024, directors can now voluntarily verify their identity with Companies House, ahead of mandatory requirements coming into effect later this year.
The New Requirements
The identity verification system forms part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, designed to enhance transparency and reduce economic crime. Over six million individuals will need to comply within 12 months once verification becomes compulsory, expected from autumn 2025.
Business leaders can verify their identity through two methods: directly via GOV.UK One Login or through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP). This phased approach has been implemented to reduce the administrative burden on businesses while ensuring comprehensive compliance.
Why This Matters for Your Business
The changes represent the most significant reforms to Companies House since its establishment in 1844. The new system will provide greater assurance about who is setting up, running, owning and controlling UK companies, directly benefiting businesses, lenders and consumers.
Companies House CEO Louise Smyth CBE emphasised that identity verification will improve data quality and tackle misuse of the companies register. For existing directors, the verification requirement will be integrated into the annual confirmation statement process to minimise disruption.
Protecting Against Economic Crime
These measures address growing concerns about economic crime, particularly following incidents where fraudulent filings were made at Companies House. The enhanced verification system will help prevent identity theft and provide more certainty about business relationships.
Action Required
Directors and people with significant control (PSCs) are encouraged to complete identity verification during the voluntary window to avoid delays when it becomes mandatory. The process is straightforward and can be completed online through the official channels.
Key Deadlines
While voluntary verification is available now, mandatory compliance is expected from autumn 2025. Early adoption will help businesses avoid potential bottlenecks and ensure smooth operations when the requirement becomes compulsory.
