FAQs

What is Companies House identity verification and do I need to complete it?

Companies House now requires all company directors, People with Significant Control (PSCs), and anyone filing documents on behalf of a company to verify their identity. This is a one-time process that involves creating a Companies House account and submitting identity documents. If you're a director or PSC and haven't yet verified your identity, you'll need to do so to remain compliant. We can guide you through the verification process and help ensure you meet all the requirements and deadlines.

When does my Self Assessment tax return need to be filed?

The deadline for online Self Assessment tax returns is 31st January following the end of the tax year. For example, for the 2024/25 tax year (ending 5th April 2025), your return must be filed by 31st January 2026. Any tax owed is also due by this date.

Can you help me set up a new business?

Absolutely. We can advise on the most tax-efficient business structure (sole trader, partnership, or limited company), help with company formation, register you for the appropriate taxes, and set up your bookkeeping systems. We'll guide you through the entire process.

I'm selling a property – do you handle Capital Gains Tax?

Yes, we provide Capital Gains Tax advice and calculations for property sales, business asset disposals, and investment sales. We'll help you understand your liability, claim available reliefs, and ensure your CGT return is filed correctly and on time.

Can you help with Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)?

Yes, we have extensive experience with CIS for both contractors and subcontractors. We can handle your monthly returns, verify subcontractors, reclaim overpaid deductions, and ensure you're meeting all your CIS obligations.

What accounting software do you work with?

We work with all major accounting software packages including Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, and FreeAgent. If you don't currently use software, we can recommend the best solution for your needs.

How often will I hear from you?

For annual compliance work, we'll be in touch when returns are due and if we need additional information. For ongoing clients, we maintain regular contact throughout the year. We'll also proactively alert you to relevant tax deadlines, changes in legislation, and planning opportunities.

Do I need to visit your office?

Not necessarily. While we're always happy to meet clients face-to-face, many of our services can be provided entirely remotely through secure file sharing and video calls. We'll work in whatever way is most convenient for you.

Where are you located and what areas do you serve?

Our offices are based in Gravesend, Kent, and we serve clients throughout the local area and across the UK. Many of our services can be provided remotely, so geographic location is rarely a barrier to working together.

Do I need an accountant or can I do my own tax return?

You can legally complete your own tax return, but many people find the process stressful and worry about making costly mistakes. An accountant ensures accuracy, identifies tax-saving opportunities you might miss, keeps you compliant with changing rules, and saves you time to focus on your business. Most clients find the tax savings and peace of mind more than justify the cost.

How much tax will I actually pay as self-employed/a landlord?

This depends on your profits, other income, and personal allowances. We can provide you with accurate projections so you know what to expect and can budget accordingly. We'll also advise on tax-efficient ways to structure your affairs to legally minimise your tax bill.
