Making Tax Digital for the Self-Employed: What Gravesend Business Owners Need to Know

With Self Assessment season behind us, there is a much bigger change on the horizon that every self-employed person in Gravesend and across Kent needs to prepare for. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment, commonly known as MTD for ITSA, launches on 6 April 2026 and will fundamentally change the way sole traders and landlords report their income to HMRC.

If you are self-employed, a freelancer, a tradesperson, or a landlord, this is the most significant shift in tax administration in a generation. At MCC Partners, based right here on Saddington Street in Gravesend, we want to make sure our local business community is fully prepared well before the deadline arrives.

What Is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, or MTD for ITSA, replaces the traditional annual Self Assessment tax return with a new system of quarterly digital reporting. Instead of filing one tax return each January, affected taxpayers will need to submit four quarterly updates throughout the year, followed by a final declaration at year end.

The quarterly updates are summaries of your business income and expenses, submitted through MTD-compatible software directly to HMRC. They are not mini tax returns and you do not need to make detailed accounting adjustments at each quarter. Think of them as regular check-ins that keep HMRC informed of your financial position throughout the year.

Who Is Affected and When?

The rollout is being phased in based on your gross qualifying income, which means your total income from self-employment and property before expenses are deducted. The phases are as follows:

From 6 April 2026: Self-employed individuals and landlords with combined gross qualifying income exceeding £50,000 must comply. This is based on income reported on your 2024/25 tax return.

From 6 April 2027: The threshold drops to include those with gross qualifying income above £30,000, based on your 2025/26 tax return.

From 6 April 2028: The threshold reduces further to £20,000, bringing even more sole traders and landlords into the regime.

It is important to understand that qualifying income is your gross turnover or rental receipts, not your profit. So even if your expenses bring your profit well below these thresholds, your gross income is what determines whether you are in scope.

What Will You Need to Do?

Under MTD for ITSA, you will need to keep digital records of all your business income and expenses using MTD-compatible software. Paper records and basic spreadsheets that do not connect to HMRC systems will no longer be sufficient for those who are mandated into the scheme.

You will then submit quarterly updates by the following deadlines each year: 7 August, 7 November, 7 February, and 7 May. After the final quarterly update, you will complete a final declaration by 31 January, which brings together all your income sources and any claims for reliefs or allowances.

What Does This Mean for Gravesend's Self-Employed Community?

Gravesend is home to a thriving community of sole traders, from independent retailers along the high street to tradespeople, freelancers, and property landlords across the borough. Many of these business owners currently work with their accountant once a year to file their Self Assessment return. That annual rhythm is about to change dramatically.

The shift to quarterly reporting means you will need to stay on top of your records throughout the year. For many self-employed people, this will require adopting new software, changing bookkeeping habits, and working more closely with their accountant on an ongoing basis.
