Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: What You Need to Know

06 May 2025

HMRC's Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative represents a significant shift in how self-employed individuals and landlords manage their tax affairs. As your trusted accountancy partner in Gravesend, MCC Partners is here to guide you through these changes and ensure a smooth transition for your business.

What is MTD for Income Tax?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is HMRC's digital transformation programme that will fundamentally change how self-employed individuals and landlords report and pay their income tax. Instead of the traditional annual Self Assessment tax return, MTD introduces a system of digital record-keeping and quarterly updates to HMRC.

When Will It Affect You?

HMRC has announced a phased implementation approach:

  • From 6 April 2026: Affects those with annual gross income over £50,000 from self-employment and property letting
  • From 6 April 2027: Extends to those with annual gross income between £30,000 and £50,000
  • From 6 April 2028: Includes those with annual gross income between £20,000 and £30,000

If your combined gross income from self-employment and property letting is £20,000 or less, you won't be required to follow the MTD rules (though you can choose to do so voluntarily).

What Does "Gross Income" Mean?

It's important to understand that HMRC considers your gross income before any expenses or deductions:

  • For self-employed individuals: This is your total sales/turnover before any expenses
  • For landlords: This is your total rental income before any expenses or agent fees
  • If you have both self-employment and rental income: These are combined to determine if you meet the threshold

What Will You Need to Do?

Under MTD for Income Tax, you'll need to:

  1. Keep Digital Records: Maintain all business records using compatible software or spreadsheets with bridging software
  2. Submit Quarterly Updates: Report income and expenses to HMRC every three months
  3. Complete an End of Year Process: Finalise your tax position, make any adjustments, and submit a final declaration

The quarterly updates will follow this pattern:

  • 6 April to 5 July (due by 7 August)
  • 6 April to 5 October (due by 7 November)
  • 6 April to 5 January (due by 7 February)
  • 6 April to 5 April (due by 7 May)

Are There Any Exemptions?

You may be exempt from MTD if:

  • You don't have a UK National Insurance number
  • You're a foster carer or shared lives carer with only qualifying care income
  • You're already exempt from MTD for VAT
  • You're "digitally excluded" due to factors like disability, age, location, or religious beliefs

How Should You Prepare?

If you expect to be in scope for MTD, we recommend taking these steps:

  1. Determine Your Start Date: Calculate your gross income to identify which phase will affect you
  2. Choose Appropriate Software: Select a digital solution that meets your business needs
  3. Start Digital Record-Keeping Early: Begin familiarising yourself with digital systems before your mandated start date
