1st January 2026
Happy New Year! Whilst many of us are still enjoying the festive period, there's an important date looming on the calendar: 31st January 2026 – the deadline for submitting your Self Assessment tax return for the 2024/25 tax year.
If you haven't started your tax return yet, don't panic. You've got exactly 31 days to get everything sorted, and with a bit of planning and organisation, that's plenty of time.
Why the Rush Matters
HMRC doesn't mess about when it comes to late filing. Miss the deadline and you'll face an automatic £100 penalty, even if you don't owe any tax. Leave it later still, and the penalties increase significantly. More importantly, if you owe tax, you need to pay it by 31st January too, or you'll start accruing interest and further penalties.
Who Needs to File?
You need to complete a Self Assessment tax return if you:
- Are self-employed or a partner in a business partnership
- Have untaxed income over £1,000 (including rental income, investment income, or tips)
- Earn over £100,000 per year
- Need to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge
- Have capital gains above the annual allowance
- Are a company director (unless your only income is through PAYE)
- Have income from overseas
Your 31-Day Action Plan
Week 1 (1st-7th January): Gather all your documentation. This includes P60s, P45s, bank statements, invoices, receipts, and any other records of income and expenses. Don't wait until the last minute to discover you're missing crucial documents.
Week 2 (8th-14th January): Start working through your tax return. If you're filing online (which most people do), register for HMRC's online services if you haven't already. This can take up to 10 working days to activate, so don't delay.
Week 3 (15th-21st January): Complete your return and double-check everything. Common mistakes can lead to overpaying tax or triggering an HMRC enquiry, so it's worth taking the time to get it right.
Week 4 (22nd-31st January): Submit your return and arrange payment if you owe tax. Remember, different payment methods take different amounts of time to clear, so factor this in.
